The South is a fascinating area of the country to explore. From the bayous of south Louisiana to the rolling hills of north Alabama, there is something here for everyone! I have spent many years visiting the interesting and unique places that the South has to offer. Here is what I found...

Historic Finds

Stand on the stage where Elvis Presley got his professional start and was once home to the radio show the Louisiana Hayride! Don't forget to look for a few ghosts along the way! (Note: the basement was once home to the city morgue). Haunted tours are scheduled throughout the year.

Tour the plantation that inspired the historical novel Widow of the South by Robert Hicks. The Battle of Franklin was one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. This is one of the better historic tours in the South. You have the chance to take your time and explore.

Kent Plantation House

Alexandria, LA

Historic Tours:
Mon-Sat 9:00am-5:00pm
Tours start at 9, 10, and 11:00am, 1, 2, and 3:00pm

The Kent house is one of my favorite plantations to visit. It is an original Creole house and is more beautiful than photos can convey. On the grounds, the different houses (i.e. blacksmith shop, slave shacks, etc.) are such a pleasure to explore. Each year in October the Kent House performs a traditional 19th century funeral completely in Latin with a funeral procession and costumed docent tours of area cemeteries. A must see!

Kate Chopin House (ruins)
Bayou Folk Museum
243 Hwy 495
Natchitoches, LA 71416

In the 1880s, author Kate Chopin of The Awakening fame lived in this house and created quite a stir in the small community of Cloutierville, Louisiana. Her avant garde ways made her the talk of the town. In October 2008, due to arson, the Kate Chopin House/Bayou Folk Museum burned to the ground with almost all artifacts therein. One can still see the historic marker and the lot (this photo was taken in Oct. 2008, unsure of the state of the lot at present).
